Using a Slideshows in the Classroom for Photography

I plan to use a smart board to display a power point from the unit. The unit is will require the students to see the picture. For example if the topic is about Nature and how take Landscape pictures then I will need to show examples. Power points are particularly helpful when used in the classroom as it can attract the learner and make learning interactive. When using power points set to music you can time your slide transitions. Power points also support the use of animations, and you can animate objects in power points or insert movie clips to make your presentations interesting. This can prove to be useful when you are helping the students study. Using power point will allow me to show the difference between a picture using the rule of thirds and a picture that does not. Students should also have a thorough knowledge of the history of photography, for this knowledge provides for a richer experience in the use of materials and in the making of aesthetic judgments. By understanding the past, we can more fully explore in the present. Some high school students may know about some common famous artist; They have certainly heard the names of most of the photographers, but for the most part, lack any in-depth feeling for and real knowledge of their work. With many students it is almost impossible to carry on a conversation about photography in which one refers to examples of past work. The slide show is meant to provide a visual bridge.

  1. I agree with what you are saying about power point. It should be used to show pictures and give visuals to aid teachers with their presentations. For the most part I do not like power point, because many times I have experienced teachers just having bullet points and reading off the power point and it is very dry and boring. When I am a teacher I hope to have my power point presentations be mostly visual.

  2. I also think power points are a great classroom tool. Many of my professors use them and post them for the student to copy. This enables us to listen more attentively and just jot down a few notes versus all of them. The visual aspect is also a plus, especially for photography. Music can liven up the presentation, and be an attention grabber. Power points do work for all subject areas.

  3. I absolutely love using PowerPoint and it can definitely be used in any content area classroom. It is a great way to become creative with your visuals and words; I particularly like the animation feature. PowerPoint works well with visual learners.
I like the idea in your post. I just have a suggestion. After teaching you intended lesson, you could then assign your students to create a photography project using PowerPoint. The students can then present their project. This is also a great way for students to practice their public speaking.
    Overall, great post!

  4. I believe in the potential of PowerPoint presentations, specially for an Art class because we are constantly describing visuals, through power point we help the students understand visual concepts with ease, besides at times PowerPoint gives you the opportunity to show images that are taken from the internet, as opposed to getting expensive color printouts or reproductions.
, Although as a teacher needs to be creative and make Powerpoints that will work to their potential, by making presentations that flow, because we all know that there is always the typical teacher or professor who overloads PowerPoint’s with irrelevant and dry information that could make of a PowerPoint the most obsolete teaching tool.

  5. Imagine trying to print out every picture you wanted to show a class then having to make copies for each student. Then think about if you had more then one section of students and the first section wrinkled and messed up all the photos you printed. That thought alone make and powerpoint slide show a must have in art classes. This also makes a picture open for interpretation and more compare and contrast. SImple click of a mouse or button and your class now has a whole art gallery to work with. The power of power point is so limitless and the arts are the best places to use them as they all require and direct visual almost all the time especially for giving examples!
